From An Alumnus

Over the last several weeks, I’ve been reflecting on the impact of our hometown university on my life and how alumni shaped my experience at UAA. Their monetary donations made it possible for me to join and travel with the Seawolf Debate Team. Their gifts of time and mentorship expanded my horizons and vision of future possibilities. And their networks and connections helped me land my first job after graduation. So much of what I’ve been able to do has been thanks to UAA alumni, and I want today’s students to have those same opportunities.

As UAA enters a new chapter, I’m reminded that alumni are a critical part of charting that course. While our time at the university may have passed, our diverse experiences have shaped who we are today. We have the opportunity to invest in our university, its students and shape both for the better.

2022 is a year of change for UAA. Chancellor Parnell will complete his first full year at the helm later this year, and the University of Alaska System’s newly appointed President Pat Pitney is continuing her tireless advocacy for higher education in our state. UAA staff, faculty and leadership have continued to make education possible throughout the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic, definitively proving their worth and the value of our institution. It’s also a year of opportunity — with a more stable budget outlook and targeted investments in key programs. UAA can once again serve as an engine of economic development for our communities and a locus of personal growth and development for current and future students.

As we continue through a year of change and opportunity, I encourage you to get — or stay — involved in any way you can:

  • Consider a monetary gift. As a new member of the University of Alaska Foundation Board of Directors, I’d urge you to consider a monetary donation in support of UAA in general or a program near and dear to your heart if you are so able. The For Alaska campaign is in full swing and we are well within reach of our $200 million dollar goal.

  • Invest your time. As students, we looked to alumni to not only see what we could do with the rest of our lives, but to also learn from their experiences and expertise. Take a moment to reach out to your college or department and find new ways to invest in today’s students.

  • Maximize your network. UAA has alumni chapters all across the country. Consider attending an event or joining a chapter this year to reconnect with fellow alums and form new friendships. Those connections have been deeply meaningful for me and I hope they will be for you as well.

UAA alumni are an amazing group of individuals who have made a meaningful impact in the lives of countless students. I’m proud to be one of you, and I hope you’ll join me in helping UAA write the next chapter of its history.
