Protect the Net, Defend the Goal
From lacing up skates as a youth around Anchorage to becoming one of UAA’s hockey legends, Chris King’s journey is nothing short of thrilling. Driven by a passion to pave the way for future athletes, King made UAA his stage to shine, playing in front of family and friends. His fierce determination propelled the Seawolves to their first playoff victory, marking a historic moment that catapulted them into the final five.
Post-college, King took his skills to the professional arena, conquering challenges through hard work and the invaluable lessons learned at UAA. Reflecting on his journey, he credits his success to the perfect blend of dedication, top-notch coaching and a team that pushed him to his limits.
Originally dreaming of becoming a PE teacher, King pivoted to journalism and public communications at UAA. His education polished his communication skills, setting the stage for a stellar career with Avis Alaska. UAA not only made him the first college graduate in his family, but also introduced him to his wife, Stephanie. King, now a driving force behind UAA’s hockey program, volunteers with the Seawolf 5th Line, a nonprofit ensuring the continual growth of the men’s ice hockey program. As a board member, he’s on a mission to rally support, urging businesses to back UAA Hockey financially for a competitive edge in Division 1 athletics.
Joining Avis Alaska, thanks to his wife’s family, marked the beginning of a competitive career for King. As vice president of operations, his unwavering commitment to helping Avis Alaska seize a larger market share remains a testament to his passion for success. The pinnacle of the Halcro family’s 30-year support for UAA Athletics is the naming of the Avis Alaska Sports Complex. Former Alaska House of Representatives member Andrew Halcro serves as chairman of the board for Avis Alaska.
King firmly believes this investment enhances the fan experience and contributes to UAA’s overall growth. The complex, now a catalyst for UAA, beckons people to attend and stay in Alaska. King envisions it as a place where people declare, “This is somewhere I want to be,” spotlighting Avis Alaska’s dedication as an Anchorage-based, family-owned powerhouse.
The naming process, backed by strong administrative support, including Chancellor Parnell and Vice Chancellor Ryan Buchholdt, is a source of pride for King. The 10-year partnership between Avis Alaska and UAA not only helps the Seawolves be more self-sufficient, but elevates the hockey program to new heights.
As Avis Alaska hits its 70th year in 2025, the complex’s legacy intertwines with the company’s commitment to community engagement and education support. With 11 locations statewide, King applauds the collective efforts of Avis Alaska employees, expressing a heartfelt desire for them to take pride in their accomplishments.
A building named after Avis Alaska symbolizes a lasting legacy. King urges employees and the community to enjoy their achievements and invites everyone to contribute to the enduring success of UAA’s hockey program for generations to come. His story isn’t just about hockey; it’s a tale of passion, perseverance and leaving an indelible mark on the Alaska sports landscape.
